Video resolution

Wednesday August 18 2021

In my blog post "The Great Fool-acy", I speak to the dramatic increase in megapixels on cameras. The focus of the article is still photos.

I understand many photographers are now getting involved in video. That's actually a significant part of the revenue stream for commercial photographers. If you are also a videographer, here's some specifications on video resolution that may help you:

720p is 0.3 megapixels, 720 x 480 pixels
HD 720p is 0.9 megapixels, 1280 x 720 pixels
FHD 1080p is 2.1 megapixels, 1920 x 1080 pixels
2K video is 3.7 megapixels, 2560 x 1440 pixels
4K video is 8.2 megapixels, 3840 x 2160 pixels
8K video is 35.4 megapixels, 8192 x 4320 pixels

YouTube recommends videos uploaded to their platform be FHD format (2.1 megapixels).
